New Gallery Content Type

After about two weeks work, I'm almost finished the new gallery content type.

It's been quite a mission to get this done, a little longer than I originally planned but at the same time it's got a lot more in it than I originally antipated.

So, a quick list of the features:

  • as always, multiple galleries enabling multiple privileges
  • many pictures to each gallery
  • saving of the originals
  • automatically generates all required picture sizes
  • specify as many picture sizes on a per gallery basis

One thing I realised when creating the view.mhtml components was that everyone's gallery will be different. A lot of content types have a fairly similar look and feel (eg. a blog is a blog, a page is a page, a news item is a news item) but the gallery, much like menus, will be highly customised by each user for each installation. Therefore, I just created some very minimal view pages with the intention that these will be overridden. Most other content types work straight out of the box. In fact, even the index doesn't show any thumbnails because, out of the box, there are no thumbnails. You could just add a size to the gallery (say 100 pixels) for the thumbnails and use that but that's up to you.

As with everything in Zaapt you get good and straightfoward administration and a reasonable front-end default but you have the power to override it to create some really cool stuff.
